This Saturday Eagle Farm racecourse hosts its first exciting meeting of the Brisbane Winter Racing Carnival, the Treasury Casino QLD Oaks Day.
One of the highlight events at the meeting will be the $250,000 Group 2 BRC Sire’s Produce Stakes, which has attracted 15 promising two-year-olds.
Likely to start as one of the highly fancied favourites for Saturday is the Chris Waller-trained Pressday. The improving Domesday colt has had four starts for two wins and a place including his impressive last start victory in the Group 2 Champagne Classic (1200m) at Doomben.
Pressday has drawn wide with barrier 11 in the 2010 BRC Sire’s Produce, as have a number of the other favourites, and will be ridden by Jim Cassidy as he heads towards a run in the $500,000 Group 1 T J Smith (1600m) on June 12.
Rosehill-based trainer Waller will also be represented by American Crew, the consistent Stratum gelding jumping from barrier 12 with Kerrin McEvoy aboard.
Another juvenile backing up from a solid run in the Champagne Classic is fourth placegetter Adebisi. Also drawn wide with barrier 11, the Shovhog colt is one of the favourite local hopefuls.
Meanwhile the Lee Freedman-trained Smokin’ Joey, coming off a fifth place in the Classic, has also suffered a blow with a poor barrier 13 draw.
Horses that could cause an upset on Saturday include Anthony Cummings’ up-and-coming Dane Shadow gelding Shadows In The Sun seeking his maiden black type win from barrier nine, and Choisir colt Chosen To Fly looking to improve from their 11th place in the Champagne Classic.
The inside three barriers were drawn by fillies Just Destiny, Molson and Jesse’s Girl
Coming up trumps in the barrier draw were three fine fillies, Just Destiny, Molson and Jesse’s Girl with gates one, two and three respectively.
$400,000 Group 1 Queensland Oaks (2400m) where the country’s finest three-year-old fillies will fight it out. Other drawcards include the $250,000 Group 2 Eagle Farm Cup (2200m), the $200,000 Group 2 Dane Ripper Stakes (1400m) and the $150,000 Group 2 QTC Cup (1300m).
