Awesome Rock Heads 2014 VRC Sires’ Produce Stakes Nominations

March 4th, 2014

Leon Corstens’ progressive colt Awesome Rock will continue towards April’s Golden Slipper via the VRC Sires’ Produce Stakes 2014 at Flemington Racecourse this Saturday.

The son of Fastnet Rock is one of 12 two-year-olds nominated for this year’s $220,000 Group 2 Henry Bucks Sires’ Produce Stakes (1400m), a key race on a bumper Newmarket Handicap Day program.

It is also an ideal lead up for juveniles eyeing the upcoming riches of the Sydney Autumn Racing Carnival, most notably the iconic $3.5 million Group 1 Golden Slipper Stakes (1200m) at Rosehill on April 5.

Having had just the two starts to date Awesome Rock is currently well down the Golden Slipper ballot and as such pays a juicy $101 in the futures markets on the classic.

It is a price however that is set to firm should they step up to the plate at Flemington on Saturday.

They debuted at Bendigo in early February and were a well beaten seventh before improving at Sandown on the 26th of last month with a tidy two length win over 1300m despite having been difficult to load into the barriers.

It is an obvious class rise for them on the weekend, but one Corstens is hopeful they can manage.

Also coming off a win is then the Steve Richards-trained Marcado.

The Choisir gelding won on debut over 1100m at the track on February 15 with a good effort in the Listed Talindert Stakes for $72,000 in winnings.

Other non-maidens in the VRC Sires’ Produce Stakes nominations this year include Peter Moody’s Talindert Stakes fifth placegetter Red Letter Day, the Mick Price-trained last start Geelong winner Hawking and the well-tried Boomwaa for Robbie Laing.

After being tested at Group 1 level for the first time in the Black Caviar Lightning running a disappointing 10th, Boomwaa dropped back to their own age for the Blue Diamond on February 22 and were far from disgraced when three and a half lengths off the winner Earthquake when fifth.

Also in the mix are the likes of David Hayes’ Blue Diamond ninth placed Fastnet Rock colt Zululand and Stratum Star.

See below for the complete Henry Bucks Stakes 2014 Sires’ Produce Stakes nominations, the final field due for release on Wednesday.
