2014 ATC Sires’ Produce Stakes Final Field and Barrier Draw

April 8th, 2014

A talented field of eleven two-year-olds have accepted a position in the final field for the 2014 Group 1 ATC Sires’ Produce Stakes (1400m) at Royal Randwick this weekend, on day 1 of the inaugural The Championships.

While unable to make much of an impact when tenth in the major Group 1 Golden Slipper (1200m) at Rosehill Gardens last weekend, trainer Bjorn Baker accepted a position for Unencumbered in the final field for the ATC Sires’ Produce Stakes.

Amassing five wins and two places from nine race starts to date, Unencumbered debuted in October with an impressive turn of foot to finish the Sharp Plate (1000m) nearly a length in the clear of his closest rival.

Returning to the track in scintillating form after 6 weeks in the spelling paddock, the talented Testa Rossa colt secured four consecutive victories over December and January, including a comfortable win over Stroak and Sagatona in the Group 3 McLachlan Stales (1200m) on December 28th.

Choosing to forgo the Group 1 Blue Diamond Stakes (1200m), Unencumbered appeared to have hit peak condition prior to the Slipper when second to Ghibellines in the Group 2 Todman Stakes (1200m) on March 22nd.

A possibility for the Group 1 Champagne Stakes (1600m) on April 26th, Baker is particularly confident Unencumbered will return to the winner’s circle this week from the ideal barrier 2 and with leading jockey Craig Williams retaining the ride.

Yet to be defeated in two race starts to date, Time For War will line up for his maiden tilt at Group 1 level this weekend, and will leave from the slight wide barrier 7.

Displaying a keen ability to overcome poor field position when claiming the CFMEU Mining & Energy Plate (1100m) on debut, Time For War more than stamped his claims as a two-year-old to watch when comfortably winning the Group 2 Pago Pago Stakes (1200m) last time out.

Having been partnered by apprentice jockey Damien Thornton in all races so far, both will face undoubtedly their biggest test to date in the 2014 ATC Sires’ Produce Stakes this weekend, but offer trainer Gerald Ryan a legitimate chance of success.

Ryan is set to dominate the running of the 2014 ATC Sires’ Produce Stakes, having also accepted positions for Believe Yourself (barrier 8), Peggy Jean and Lucky Raquie (barrier 5).

Claiming her first two racing starts with relative ease, including the Group 2 Sweet Embrace Stakes (1200m) on March 15th, Believe Yourself nearly caused a huge boil-over in the Golden Slipper last weekend, running on from the rear of the field to finish just outside the places in fourth.

Second to Bring Me The Maid in the Group 2 Magic Night Stakes (1200m) last time out, Peggy Jean is yet to finish outside the places in four race starts and is in line to lay a serious threat on the 2014 ATC Sires’ Produce Stakes, having drawn the ideal barrier 4.

Disappointing when fifth in the Group 2 Reisling Stakes (1200m) most recently, Lucky Raquie will be aiming to return to the form that delivered a comfortable victory in the Listed Black Opal Stakes (1200m) amongst classy competition on March 9th.

Despite being unable to match the pace of his rivals and finishing second last in the Golden Slipper, consistent performer Cornrow will leave from the ideal inside barrier in this weekend’s ATC Sires’ Produce Stakes, and will pose a serious threat if reasonable track conditions are offered.

Finishing third in both the Blue Diamond Stakes and Todman Stakes, the talented Duporth colt is trainer Mick Price’s sole representative this weekend after sending Jabali to the spelling paddock.

In-form runner Zululand will be chasing a rare double in Sires’ Produce events this weekend, and will be joined by Kumaon (barrier 11), Scratch Me Lucky (barrier 3), Unknown Destiny (barrier 9) and Miss Interiors (barrier 6).
