2014 W.A. Sires’ Produce Stakes Final Field and Barrier Draw

April 9th, 2014

Sharing the same weekend as the Group 1 ATC Sires’ Produce Stakes at Royal Randwick, the Group 3 W.A. Sires’ Produce Stakes (1400m) will run as one of two major events at Ascot racecourse this weekend, offering race fans the chance to witness the best two-year-old fillies and colts Western Australia has to offer.

Yet to finish outside the places in five career starts to date, talented colt Hobart Jones has been confirmed for a tilt at the 2014 W.A. Sires’ Produce Stakes.

Winning his two debut races over 1100 and 1000 metres in December, Hobart Jones was unlucky when blocked for a run and third in both the Listed Supremacy Stakes (1100m) and Listed Perth Stakes (1100m) first-up this year, but returned to the winner’s circle with an impressive turn of foot to win the Group 2 Karrakatta Plate (1200m) last time out.

Having drawn the awkward barrier 13 for the 2014 W.A. Sires’ Produce Stakes, Hobart Jones will need to find clear passage early if to continue his impressive run of form this weekend.

Also included in the final field for the 2014 W.A. Sires’ Produce Stakes is Karrakatta Plate second Vitalism.

Trained locally at Ascot by Tiarnna Robertson, Vitalism is yet to break through for a maiden race win in only four starts, however has been unlucky to finish second on two occasions.

Debuting with a less-than convincing run for seventh in the Westspeed Initial Plate (1000m) in October, the Vital Equine filly has returned to racing in good form this year, finishing second to Django in the Nominate Yearling For Westspeed Open (1000m) and fourth in the Westpeed 2.y.o. Plate (1000m) prior to her most recent performance.

Interestingly, only two runners other than Hobart Jones confirmed for the 2014 W.A. Sires’ Produce Stakes carrying winning form into the event; Breckenridge and Crown Choice.

Contesting three race starts to date, Breckenridge finished third in the Westspeed 2.y.o. Plate first-up and fourth in the Westspeed 2.y.o. Maiden (1100m) on March 5th before claiming the Drumprint Maiden (1200m) last time out.

Finishing sixth in the Listed Supremacy Stakes on debt on March 1st, Crown Choice quickly stamped his claims as a two-year-old to watch this season, strolling home to win the Westspeed Plate (1200m) most recently on March 19th.
