2014 Sires’ Produce Stakes Winner is Peggy Jean

April 12th, 2014

Pre-post favourite Peggy Jean has produced a strong final straight sprint to win the Group 1 ATC Sires’ Produce Stakes (1400m) on day 1 of The Championships at Royal Randwick this afternoon ahead of Scratch Me Lucky and Cornrow.

Jumping only fairly, Peggy Jean settled well within the pack, allowing early leaders Time For War, Unknown Destiny and Unencumbered to set a fair pace.

Rounding the bend with a lot of work to do, Peggy Jean quickly spooled up and exploded from the main group, quickly catching and overtaking Scratch Me Lucky; consistent performer Cornrow returning to competitive form and running on for third.

Trainer Gerald Ryan saddled four runners in the 11 horse final field for the 2014 ATC Sires’ Produce Stakes, and was revealed to have secured the first Group 1 of the inaugural The Championships.

“I was petrified I wouldn’t get a winner” Ryan said with a chuckle following the final race.

“She’s a good filly. The first day Kerrin McEvoy rode her here he rang me that night and said she was a genuine filly.

“We thought she’d be a better filly in the spring but when they’re two year olds and going good you have a crack.

“I said she wasn’t a Golden Slipper filly, she’s more a Sires’ and Champagne and we’ve just aimed her towards that.

“It doesn’t matter whether if it’s a good feel of a bad feel, a wet track or dry track; it’s a Group 1 and they can’t take it from her.”

In-form jockey Nash Rawiller delivered a sensational ride on the Myboycharlie filly in the 2014 ATC Sires’ Produce Stakes, and shared his admiration for the talented two-year-old immediately after dismounting.

“I had an opportunity to ride her thankfully about three or four weeks ago in a trial and came back and said to Gerald if this isn’t a Group 1 horse, I’ve never ridden one and she lived up to that today” Rawiller said after taking out the first Group 1 race of The Championships.

“She’s pretty special I reckon and just putting it together now.

“We can pick a few races here and the Thousand Guineas is probably written all over here in the spring.”

Having now secured two wins and three places from only five race starts, Peggy Jean will be prepared for an appearance in the Group 1 Champagne Stakes (1600m) in two weeks’ time.
