2015 VRC Sires’ Produce Stakes to Figure for Manhattan Blues

March 3rd, 2015

Manhattan Blues was particularly impressive when running on for a close fourth in the Group 1 Blue Diamond Stakes (1200m) last weekend, and will next target the Group 2 VRC Sires’ Produce Stakes (1400m) at Flemington on March 14th, according to trainer Tony McEvoy.

Jumping from the gates well in the Blue Diamond Stakes, jockey Nick Hall settled Manhattan Blues well within the pack of 14; allowing the race’s early leaders to set a noticeably quick tempo away from the barriers and rounding the bending.

Pressing forward and search for a clear racing line upon arriving on the final straight, the son of Manhattan Rain quickly spooled up and charged forward; hitting the line less-than three lengths off the pace of winner Pride Of Dubai.

Confident the talented two-year-old is searching for more distance, McEvoy told Racing Ahead he was thrilled with Manhattan Blues’ maiden tilt at the highest level and is confident he is more than a chance of figuring in contention in the 2015 VRC Sires’ Produce Stakes as a result.

“He’s a very good galloper this fellow and not much went right for him,” McEvoy said.

“It was a super performance and he’s come out of the race very well so I’ve kept him here at Flemington and we’ll consider the Sires’ for him on Saturday week.”

Placing third and winning in two strong barrier trials prior to his competitive debut, Manhattan Blues was unlucky to be checked leaving the gates in the Schweppes Plate (1000m) on January 10th, but recovered late to hit the line a length in the clear of closest rival Karlovasi.

Running sixth in the Listed Blue Diamond Preview C&G (1000m) on January 26th, the gelding out of Belle Feline ran on for a close second to stable mate Stoker in the Inglis Premier (1000m) on February 7th, in what was his only other start prior to the Blue Diamond Stakes.

2015 VRC Sires’ Produce Stakes are set to be taken by March 9th, while a final field and barrier due are due to be completed and released by midday, March 11th.
