2015 VRC Sires’ Produce Stakes Likely for Andrioli

March 11th, 2015

Trainer Robert Smerdon has included talented filly Andrioli in nominations for two races at Flemington this Saturday, but has revealed he is leaning towards saddling the two-year-old in the Group 2 VRC Sires’ Produce Stakes over 1400m.

Yet to contest a black type event in her short two start career so far, Andrioli has also been included in the final field for Saturday’s Group 3 TBV Thoroughbred Breeders’ Stakes (1200m) for fillies on the same Flemington card.

Pleased with the form and class displayed by the daughter of Stryker in recent weeks, Smerdon told AAP the safety of a fillies’ race is tempting, however the conditions and distance of the 2015 VRC Sires’ Produce Stakes look sure to play into her strengths on Saturday.

“She’s got a great constitution and is a really robust filly,” Smerdon said.

“She improved markedly from the first run to her second run and the blinkers going on were a benefit for her going forward.

“I think 1400 metres will be her best trip, but whether that field is the best one for her to be meeting, I’m not sure.

“I still haven’t decided which way to go.

“I’m thinking the 1400 is the trip she is looking for, but the other race is a fillies’ race and there’s always a bit of protection in running against their own gender.

“I haven’t had a real good look at both fields yet but she’ll line up in one of them.”

Debuting for sixth amongst classy company including Stoker, Manhattan Blues and Jameka in the $240,000 Inglis Premier (1000m) on February 7th, Andrioli jumped from the gates well in the Hyland Race Colours Plate (1200m) last week and never appeared in doubt; hitting the line two lengths in the clear of closest rival Slumberland.

The 2015 VRC Sires’ Produce Stakes final field and barrier draw is due to be completed and released today (Wednesday, 11 March).
