Lazumba Capable of Competitive VRC Sires’ Produce Stakes Appearance

March 11th, 2015

Lazumba has contested just one competitive race start so far, but is reportedly in exceptional condition ahead of her black type debut in Saturday’s Group 2 VRC Sires’ Produce Stakes (1400m) at Flemington.

Jumping from the gates only fairly in the Evergreen Turf 2.y.o Maiden Plate (1100m) on February 26th, Lazumba was forced to settle off the pace of the race’s early leaders, but displayed an exceptional turn of foot in the final straight to finish just off the pace of Eclat.

Having saddled talented filly Rostova to VRC Sires’ Produce success in 2009, trainer Steve Richards is confident that while she is a different horse, Lazumba is more than capable of breaking through for a maiden race win at Flemington on Saturday.

“Different sort of horse, Rostova was a sheer sprinter, she was a Preview winner and Prelude winner and won over 1000m on Cup Day, she ran fifth in a Blue Diamond, this filly is not that type of horse,” Richards told Racing Victoria.

“This filly showed a bit of promise in the Spring but we put her away as she wasn’t quite ready and we put her out.

“I thought from the word go this autumn that she would be a Sires’ horse, I mean we made a couple of payments  for the Blue Diamond along the way because they come up early but I didn’t pay the third one as she wasn’t a Diamond horse.

“She’ll go out, she’s done a good job to get here, she’ll go out and come back for the spring and we’ll look at races like the Thousand Guineas and the good three-year-old fillies’ races.

“I think she’s an Oaks filly all over, that’s what I reckon she is and that’s why I’m leaning toward the Sires’.”

Confirmed amongst a classy field of 11 for Saturday’s 2015 VRC Sires’ Produce Stakes, Lazumba will have to find an extra gear if to overcome the likes of Manhattan Blues, Jameka and Sampeah.
