Purton to Partner Perignon in 2015 ATC Sires’ Produce Stakes

March 31st, 2015

Hong Kong-based hoop Zac Purton has experienced notable success in Australia on a ‘hit-and-run’ basis in recent seasons, and will be hoping to continue his good run of form when returning to Randwick on Saturday to partner two-year-old Perignon in the Group 1 ATC Sires’ Produce Stakes (1400m).

Unable to post much of a consistent run of form through the early stages of the Autumn Carnival, Perignon stormed into Sires’ Produce Stakes contention when finishing an agonizingly close second to Speak Fondly in the Group 2 Magic Night Stakes (1200m) on March 14th.

Trainer Gerald Ryan, who saddled Peggy Jean to success in the 2014 edition of the ATC Sires’ Produce Stakes has been pleased with the building form of the Snitzel filly in recent weeks and is confident the addition of Purton will mean the difference in success on Saturday.

“You don’t know until you try them over the distance,” Ryan told AAP.

“But I think she will be better over 1400 metres. She worked very well on Saturday morning and Zac Purton will ride.”

Running second amongst notable company in a Warwick Farm barrier trial prior to her competitive debut, Perignon debuted for fourth in the Wyong Magic Millions 2.y.o Classic (1100m) on December 18th before taking out the TAB Rewards Plate (1200m) just over a week later.

Placing a credible fifth in the $2 million Gold Coast Magic Millions 2.y.o Classic (1200m) on January 10th, the filly out of Last Blaze was disappointing when failing to match the late pace and seventh in the Group 2 Reisling Stakes (1200m), in what was her only other competitive start prior to the Magic Night Stakes on March 14th.

The 2015 ATC Sires’ Produce Stakes final field and barrier draw is due to be completed and released by midday today (Tuesday, March 31st).
