2016 ATC Sires’ Produce Stakes Likely for Flying Artie

March 22nd, 2016

Trainer Mick Price has revealed talented two-year-old Flying Artie is likely to remain in work and target the 2016 ATC Sires’ Produce Stakes (1400m) on Day 1 of The Championships after coming through his run in Saturday’s Golden Slipper in good order.

Jumping from the gates well, jockey Damien Oliver allowed Flying Artie to stride forward and take a handy position on the heels of the Golden Slipper’s early leaders, experiencing a relatively care-free run in transit.

Rounding onto the final straight with a clear racing line, the Artie Schiller colt immediately responded when asked for an extra effort but was unable to withstand a late charge from winner Capitalist and an impressive Yankee Rose, finishing third.

Price told Racing Victoria the two-year-old has taken plenty of benefit from another strong performance in the Golden Slipper and will likely progress to the 2016 ATC Sires’ Produce Stakes in a fortnight.

“Flying Artie came through the race well enough to suggest he could run in the Sires,” Price said.

“But a final decision on that will be made in the next seven to ten days.”

Flying Artie has been a strong and consistent performer for Price since first appearing on course in late 2015; posting one win and three minors through his four competitive starts.

Debuting for a close second behind Power Trip in the Group 3 Maribyrnong Plate (1000m) on November 7th, Flying Artie was charged with overcoming the wide and awkward barrier 13 in the Group 3 Blue Diamond Prelude (1100m) first-up this time but mustered a big turn of foot to win the race comfortably.

Again charged with overcoming a wide draw in barrier 15 in the Group 1 Blue Diamond Stakes (1200m) on February 27th, Flying Artie produced arguably a career-best performance to date for second behind stable mate Extreme Choice.
