2016 BRC Sires’ Produce Stakes Likely for Barbass

May 25th, 2016

Trainer Cameron Crockett has been pleased with the form and class displayed by Barbass through his short racing career so far, but concedes the two-year-old faces a big test in Saturday’s 2016 Group 2 BRC Sires’ Produce Stakes (1350m) at Doomben.

Barbass was purchased for only $4000, but has already amassed an impressive $90,350 in winning following a number of impressive results; namely a near two-length win in the Inglis 2.y.o Challenge (1100m) during the recent Scone Cup Carnival.

Having also included the Benfica gelding in nominations for a two-year-old race at Randwick on Saturday, Crockett conceded a run in the BRC Sires’ Produce Stakes is very ambitious, but the horse’s connections are happy to have a throw at the stumps.

“He’s nominated for Randwick but I think he will be headed up north,” Crockett told AAP.

“It could be a touch ambitious for mine, but at this stage the owners are pretty keen.

“He’s probably the best horse I’ve had in my care but I’ve never had a Group horse so I don’t know what level he can get to.

“He may step up to it, he may not. I’m not sure.

“Yes, he was impressive at Scone but what you’ve got to remember it is restricted company. It was for horses only bought from the Scone yearling sale.”

Trialling well in the lead-up to him competitive debut, Barbass clearly required a run when failing to handle the late pace and seventh in the Cressfield Maiden Plate (900m) at Scone on December 18th.

Responding well with a strong performance for second behind Star Crossed in the Ranvet Handicap (1000m) on December 27th, Barbass returned to the paddock after running on for third late in the Stewarts Grain Trading 2.y.o Maiden (1000m) on January 7th.

Resuming this time for second in the Kings Hotel Handicap (1100m) at Bathurst on April 25th, Barbass was included amongst a list of seventeen nominations for the BRC Sires’ Produce Stakes on Monday.

The 2016 BRC Sires’ Produce Stakes field and barrier draw is due to be completed and released by midday today (Wednesday, 25 May 2016).
